The Science Behind Speed Reading: How RSVP Works

Traditional reading feels slow, and no amount of pushing through the page makes it much faster. The reason has less to do with effort than with how your eyes physically move across text. Once you see how that works, a technique like RSVP starts to make a lot of sense.

How We Normally Read: Saccades and Fixations

When you read a page of text, your eyes don't glide across the words like a scanner. They move in a series of quick jumps called saccades, pausing briefly at each stop, called a fixation.

Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a reading method developed in the late 1970s, and it works differently. Rather than moving your eyes across the text, RSVP shows words one at a time in a single fixed spot on your screen.

What this suggests is that once you take away the mechanical cost of eye movement, the brain can handle text much faster than we tend to assume.
