A Brief History of Speed Reading: From Tachistoscopes to Apps

Speed reading sounds like something we invented to cope with the internet. It's older than that. The first real work on it started more than 80 years ago, and it came out of the military. What follows is how reading fast went from a wartime training problem to an app on your phone.

World War II: The Tachistoscope Era

The first thread starts with World War II air defense. The U.S. Air Force had a problem: soldiers running antiaircraft guns couldn't tell enemy planes from friendly ones fast enough. A split-second call decided whether they shot down a bomber or hit one of their own.

So Air Force psychologists reached for a device called the tachistoscope, first described by German physiologist A.W. Volkmann back in 1859. It flashed images on a screen for exact, tiny durations, and it trained observers to recognize silhouettes almost instantly.

The results surprised everyone. Observers could correctly identify aircraft silhouettes flashed for just 1/500th of a second. What mattered later, though, had nothing to do with airplanes: researchers found that subjects could also read four words flashed at once, at those same brief durations, and understand all of them.

That broke the old assumption that reading meant handling one word, or one letter, at a time. The brain could clearly take in much bigger chunks than anyone had given it credit for.

Harvard's Film-Aided Courses

Harvard picked up the thread next. In the late 1940s, researchers at Harvard Business School built the first film-aided reading course, trying to turn those tachistoscope findings into something that actually helped people read.

The method was simple enough. Projected films trained readers to widen their field of focus, and as each frame showed a little more text for a little less time, students got used to taking in larger blocks at speed.

The courses proved a point that still matters: reading speed is trainable. You can practice it and get faster. And before long, someone was going to sell that promise.

Evelyn Wood: The Mother of Speed Reading

The person who took speed reading mainstream was a teacher named Evelyn Wood. She was born in Logan, Utah in 1909 and spent the 1950s teaching remedial reading in high schools. Working with slow readers got her curious about the opposite question: what were the fast ones doing differently?

So she went looking for them. Wood studied naturally fast readers - people hitting several thousand words a minute with no training at all - and watched how they worked. One habit stood out. They didn't crawl word by word across each line; their eyes swept down the page in smooth diagonal patterns.

They also skipped subvocalization, the habit of quietly "hearing" every word in your head as you read. Most people read at about the speed they talk, roughly 150 to 250 words per minute, because they're basically reading aloud in their heads. Wood's fast readers had somehow dropped that ceiling.

In 1958 she started teaching her methods at the University of Utah, and students there reached several thousand words a minute. She's the one who coined the phrase "speed reading." Her signature trick was using the hand as a pacer, letting the eyes chase its quick zigzag down each page.

In 1959 she opened the first Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute in Washington, D.C., and the timing worked in her favor. America was drowning in paper, and professionals wanted any edge they could get on their reading piles.

Speed Reading Goes Mainstream

Her methods really caught on in the 1960s. President John F. Kennedy, a famously heavy reader, reportedly read at 1,200 words per minute and pushed his staff to take the courses. Having a president vouch for it did a lot to make speed reading respectable.

Reading Dynamics branches opened all over the country. They weren't cheap, but executives, lawyers, politicians, and students paid up anyway. By the 1970s speed reading was an established category in adult education.

It drew skeptics too. Critics asked the obvious question: were those headline speeds real, or did comprehension quietly collapse to hit them? Academics started testing the claims more carefully, and the argument over what's genuinely achievable has never fully settled.

The RSVP Revolution (1970s-1980s)

Wood's whole approach was about changing how your eyes move across a fixed page. Some researchers went the other way entirely and asked what happens if you move the text instead of the eyes.

That's Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP), developed in the late 1970s as a tool for cognitive psychology labs. The idea is simple: show words one at a time in one fixed spot, so your eyes never have to move at all.

Early results were striking. Readers could push past 1,000 words per minute and still follow what they read, well beyond what normal page reading allowed.

For the next couple of decades, though, RSVP stayed stuck in the lab. The hardware of the 80s and 90s, clunky lab rigs and early computers, just wasn't something you'd read a book on. The idea was ready long before the devices were.

The Digital Age: Speed Reading Apps

Smartphones fixed that in the 2010s. Almost overnight, everyone was carrying a screen that could flash text with precise timing, which is exactly what RSVP needs.

In 2014 a Boston company called Spritz put RSVP back in the spotlight. Their addition was the Optimal Recognition Point (ORP): they lined up each word so the specific letter your brain uses to recognize it sits in the same fixed place every time. Small change, but it made RSVP a lot easier on the eyes.

Then came the apps. Dozens of them landed on iOS and Android, each with its own spin on RSVP:

  • Spreeder offered comprehensive training programs
  • SwiftRead and Sprint Reader brought RSVP to web browsers
  • Outread made the technique accessible on Apple devices
  • Web-based tools like SpeedRead made RSVP accessible without any downloads

These days speed reading apps are a settled category with millions of users. Getting started costs nothing, and plenty of free tools will drop you into RSVP reading within seconds.

Where We Are Now

Trace that history and you're really tracing our relationship with information. It started as a military necessity, turned into an education movement, became a self-improvement industry, and ended up as a free tool on any phone.

Modern speed reading borrows from every one of those eras:

  • From the tachistoscope: your brain can take in visual information much faster than you normally let it
  • From Evelyn Wood: reading speed is trainable, and subvocalization is one of the main things holding it back
  • From RSVP research: hold the eyes still and bring the text to them, instead of moving the eyes across the text
  • From the digital era: tools cheap and simple enough to actually use every day

Looking Forward

The next stretch is being figured out right now. Some apps are wiring in AI to adjust speed based on how hard the text is. Eye-tracking might soon let an app react to how you personally read. And with the amount we're all expected to get through, reading efficiently isn't getting any less useful.

From tachistoscopes flashing plane silhouettes to phones flashing words, the goal never really changed: help people get through written information faster.
